A Terp for Choquequirao
Why in heaven’s name should a terp be constructed in the Andes? To be more precise, the location for this terp is at the remote, archaeological Inca site Choquequirao in Peru. The answer to the question is not too difficult. The idea was inspired by the monument at the Tsjitsma terp near the village of Wijnaldum in the province of Friesland, designed by architect Nynke-Rixt Jukema. Preparations for the construction of a terp at the Inca site Choquequirao have started already.

Bill Clinton: "I Did Not Have Financial Relations With That Village"
On May 28, 2011 Bill Clinton held a speech in Achlum, province Friesland. The village has some 600 inhabitants. Looks like a small audience to me. What was he up to? We searched online for the keywords "Clinton" and "Achlum" and found many articles mentioning large sums of money... Indeed Achlum should be famous for large sums of money. But not for the huge sum that allegedly has been paid for Clinton to speak. So let's pause Bill for a moment. We would like to draw your at

Frisian Women: Free and Unbound?
Below the green and black image of Saskia Holleman, the reincarnation of Mata Hari, her fellow citizen. Saskia was born in 1945 in the town of Leeuwarden in the province of Friesland, standing stark naked in the milky grasslands with a Friesian Holland cow . It is a pamphlet from the former Pacifist Socialist Party (PSP) for the Dutch general elections campaign in 1971. Besides the fact that Saskia was of Frisian descent, the pamphlet also depicts every detail of the scenery

Tolkien Pleaded in Favour of King Finn. An Immortalized Royal Tragedy
Around the year 440 (Shippey 2022), a betrayal unfolded on the southern shores of the North Sea—a tragedy not forgotten in north-western Europe, echoing even in distant Bavaria. And it never will be. We are talking about the bloody battle at the citadel of King Finn—or Fin Folcwalding Fresna cynne , as he is called in the Anglo-Saxon poem Widsið . This poem, dating from the early tenth century, recounts the fate of Finn, son of Folcwald and young king of the Frisian tribe. It

Boots Made for Walkin’
Besides Nancy Sinatra’s 1966 recommendation in her song ; what kind of boots would we recommend to hike the Frisia Coast Trail? The combination of a flat and often hard surface will have its toll when walkin' the trail. In this blog post we discuss what kind of footwear is (not) suitable. It is important to realize that the only ascents and descents of more than two meters that you are going to encounter during the 1,000 miles of the Frisia Coast Trail are manmade. It might

"My God, the Germans Bought All the Bread!" Cried Moira
The essence of the Frisia Coast Trail is hiking through the heartland of (former) Frisia and to taste the landscape, its history, its culture and to meet its people. Every now and then the Frisian bastards hike trails that cut through heartlands of other minority cultures. Hiking the illustrious Cape Wrath Trail in the upper north-east of Scotland was one of those. A two-weeks, fairly challenging trek with no fixed route and, thus, no path directions whatsoever either. How a Town Drowned Overnight. The Case of Rungholt
Rungholt. A thriving and wealthy town of the archipelago of the Wadden Sea that disappeared in the waves overnight in the year 1362. For six centuries, only legends have told us about what happened to Rungholt. A town submerged in the sea as the wrath of God. According to these medieval legends, you could still hear the chime of its church bells  rising from the dark depths of the sea. But now the remains of the town of Rungholt in Landkreis  'district' Nordfriesland, also ca
